NOVEMBER 20, 2020: Today, many of us in the Manitoba wedding industry received word that we would not qualify for small business financial support, despite being ordered to cease operation, unless we were paying to have a physical space that had to close down.

The majority of us do not need a physical space such as a studio, yet are still out of work. Pallister encouraged ALL small businesses to apply for the Bridge Grant if we were told to shut down, yet we have been denied that support because we do not have the need for a physical store front.

A small group of us are working on creating resources for all of us who've been affected by this ridiculousness to band together and stand up against it.

The Manitoba Wedding Network will be sending letters from individuals in the industry to media and government on November 27, one week from now, before the house stops sitting on December 3. I encourage everyone to write their letter as well. Please keep it concise (less than one page) and submit to the MWN email address for them to submit your voice to media and government. There is strength in numbers. Please send your letters to manitobaweddingnetwork@gmail.com, include your name, business name, website and any other contact information, and they will send them off.

Below, you can find Dropbox links to social graphics for sharing on our social media platforms, a caption to go with it, and a list of media/government contacts all in one place. I think we should all commit to posting a unified story. Might be worth asking our clients to share in support of our industry, too. I will continue to update the page as our cause gains traction with media or government officials.

Let's do this! THIS is the spirit of "Team Manitoba" right here - standing up for what's right. Forward march!

One industry member found the clip of dear Brian encouraging ALL small businesses to apply for the Bridge Grant, and that those of us ordered to close would receive support. Take a listen or download and share via the button below.

The link below includes a variety of social media templates for you to download and post on your own networks. Graphics are unified and in various formats optimized for each social network.

Our goal is to post on our platforms at 8:00 pm this evening, CST. A united voice will speak loudly, and we encourage you to include the caption provided (or amend to suit your preference) and tag those who'll listen. Media, government, news outlets, clients who you feel may share in support... let's show our strength in numbers. Don't forget the hashtag #mybusinessisnotahobby and the included text caption!

We should not accept that the government will take our taxes as businesses that contribute to the economy, but not consider us as legitimate businesses when it comes to support. Get loud. Spread the word. If you feel your clients will support and share, get them on board too.

I'll update this page as we get any traction. Ideas, feedback, etc. always welcomed; reach me on any of the channels below. Thank you for coming together to stand up for our industry!

LETTER DRIVE

Anchor 6

If your business has been negatively affected by COVID, or if you wish to show your support to those who have been affected, we encourage you to do the following:

DRIVE ONE: THE OPEN LETTER

The easiest way to add your voice is to sign the open letter, being sent on Thursday, November 26. (This date will allow a full Friday of potential media coverage.) A couple of us are working together with MLAs in an attempt to persuade the Manitoba Government to widen the Bridge Grant to include wedding and event businesses as well as the many other small businesses that have been excluded from the grant. We will be sending an open letter to Mr. Pallister and the Minister containing the list of names/businesses affected
(alongside DRIVE TWO -->) on the evening of Thursday, November 26, 2020.

Simply email your name and business name to mbopenletter@gmail.com.

All letters and signatures need to be in by November 26th at 4:00 p.m. We are already at over 100 signatures and would LOVE to at least double that!

DRIVE TWO: PERSONALIZED LETTERS

Take it a step further and write a short, personalized letter informing the government how your business has been affected.

The Manitoba Wedding Network is collecting individual, personal letters and sending them collectively as a packet, alongside the open letter, at the same time. We want to make sure you're included. If you are able, please email a concise (less than one page; longer letters will not be submitted) letter to: manitobaweddingnetwork@gmail.com

The

They will be then sent collectively before the house stops sitting on December 3rd. If you're not sure what to say, some talking points could be:

  1. Introduce yourself and your business

  2. Explain reason for writing the letter

  3. Explain how COVID has affected your business

  4. Describe what any changes will mean to you, others, and the Manitoba economy

  5. What do you want from this letter

  6. Include your own name/business name and contact information

Our voice is loud when we all speak as one. Together we have the power to convince your government to reconsider the qualifications of the Bridge Grant.
